LEZ and resale
Scotland has four Low Emission Zones. If the car you're flipping doesn't comply, fewer city buyers will want it.
The rules in one minute
- There are LEZs in the city centres of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. They operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, enforced by number-plate cameras.
- Cars must be Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel. As a rough guide, that's most petrol cars from 2006 and diesels from September 2015, but always check the reg.
- Fully electric cars and motorbikes aren't affected. Hybrids are treated as petrol or diesel.
- Exemptions include Blue Badge vehicles (registered), emergency and military vehicles, and historic vehicles at least 30 years old that meet the criteria.
Fines
A first penalty is £60, cut to £30 if paid within 14 days. It doubles each time the same vehicle enters the same LEZ within 90 days, up to £480 for cars and vans. It resets after 90 days without a fine. You can't prepay to drive in.
What it means for flipping
- Check before you bid. Use the official vehicle emissions checker with the reg from the listing.
- Price non-compliant cars for out-of-city buyers. Older diesels can still sell well in rural areas, but expect fewer enquiries from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee buyers.
- Say it in your listing. "LEZ compliant" is a selling point in the four cities.
- Getting it home: don't drive a non-compliant car through a zone yourself. Route around it or have it transported.
The calculator flags likely LEZ problems from the fuel type, Euro standard or registration date.
